Inspirations

The VOXEL-MAN project has been inspired by the work of various artists, most notably Leonardo da Vinci and his famous anatomical drawings. But it has also inspired other artists, some of whom are featured on this page.

Thorsten Kirsch

In his artistic work, Hamburg-based painter and illustrator Thorsten Kirsch has repeatedly explored the depiction of body fragments.

As one of the first visual artists, he explores the new possibilities offered by medical imaging and visualization in his etchings created since 1995, some of which can be seen here. The question of the virtual viewpoint plays just as much a role as playing with the presentation options. Conversely, he is also interested in the question of the iconography of medical images, i.e., the extent to which they are “culturally contaminated” by the chosen parameters of representation.

His works were exhibited at the Visualization in Biomedical Computing 1996 conference in the Cupola Hall of the University of Hamburg.

Ambulatorio Segreto

European avant-garde music project Ambulatorio Segreto released its album VOXEL MAN 8 in 1989, with tracks such as Hirnoberfläche (brain surface) and Ödem (edema). The cover features one of our early 3D renderings of a brain from magnetic resonance imaging.
