The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) has sold the VOXEL-MAN simulator business to a private investor. The sale includes the simulator technology, the VOXEL-MAN trademark, and the voxel-man.com and voxel-man.de web domains. The VOXEL-MAN Group will support the transition for a limited period.
The sale concludes a unique endeavor at the UKE that started as basic research in several highly innovative fields, including real-time manipulation of hard tissue in the voxel model by drilling and milling, as well as manual control of virtual instruments with six degrees of freedom and force feedback. To date, this has resulted in a broad portfolio of virtual training simulators, including VOXEL-MAN Tempo for temporal bone surgery, VOXEL-MAN Sinus for endoscopic sinus surgery, VOXEL-MAN Dental for tooth preparation, and VOXEL-MAN Sonography for abdominal and endoscopic ultrasound. In addition, there are add-ons for importing DICOM datasets and exporting models for intraoperative 3D printing.
Today, VOXEL-MAN medical training simulators are used by leading universities and hospitals in more than 30 countries across five continents. The high interest in our simulators is also reflected by a growing number of independent validation studies.
Not part of the sale are other current and past research activities and products of the VOXEL-MAN project, such as the VOXEL-MAN 3D Navigators. These works continue to be available at virtual-body.org.
