The Segmented Internal Organs of the Visible Human Male (SIO) are now available under a Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY). The license covers a wide range of educational, research, and commercial applications.
The SIO is a highly detailed 3D voxel model. It contains more than 200 anatomical objects of the torso and internal organs of a male human body. While this version comes as a set of TIFF images, conversion to DICOM in a standardized coordinate system is under way.
The dataset is part of the NCI Imaging Data Commons, a cloud-based repository that contains a large, harmonized collection of medical images. It provides an unparalleled wealth of data on both normal anatomy and pathological cases, also making it a prime resource for artificial intelligence training in medical imaging.
The SIO dataset was developed at the former Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science in Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. It was first published under a proprietary license in 2003.
